The Filipino Women’s Council (FWC) was established in May 1991 by a few committed Filipino migrant women who volunteered their time to provide support to help other Filipino women in Rome adjust to their new life in Italy.

At that time, there was a strong demand among migrants for social and psychological support.

They needed counselling and advice regarding a wide range of issues, from employer/employee relations, marriage conflicts, domestic violence, including sexual and rape incidents, to labour laws, their legal rights and other legal issues.

FWC opened a centre in October 1992 that provided referral and counselling services, as well as a temporary shelter to Filipino women victims of violence and exploitation.

Today FWC continues to sustain its work on issues related to migration and development with special attention to gender disparity through volunteer commitments and project partnerships with different institutions and NGOs both in Italy and in the Philippines.
